Osama Bin Laden Tagged On Facebook Pic

Is Mr. Osama Bin Laden social media savvy?

Not quite so when it came to Facebook. A friend tagged him on a picture captioned: “Chillin at the new crib in Islamabad”, but he didn’t know how to untag himself. CIA replied promptly and the rest was history.

Facebook Takes Action Against USocial

“Facebook has threatened legal action against a service that sells friends on the social networking site.”

I was so pleased when I first read about this. For those who don’t know what USocial is, it is a firm that allows users to buy (eek!) Facebook and Twitter friends/followers. For just $87, you can get 1,000 Twitter followers.

Great creativity but buying “friends” just ain’t right.

Whether it is from the user or business point of view, I see little use of such services. Okay, maybe it does create some artificial buzz but in the long run, I don’t see how it could work out. Nonetheless, USocial seems to be doing pretty well judging from their audacious half million offer to Twitter for a homepage ad space.

More from BBC:

“Facebook sent Cease and Desist letters to USocial claiming that the way the marketing firm operates violates its rights by sending spam, using web tools to harvest pages, getting login names and by accessing accounts that did not belong to the marketing firm.”

“USocial defended itself against Facebook’s claims, saying that it did not spam users or use web tools to gather information about profiles.

However, in response to the legal letters, USocial said it would delete the login information it had collected and broadly stop offering to sell Facebook friends.”

usocial took it down

Seems like USocial has taken the service off but its “buy-Twitter-followers” service is still available. Would Twitter send it a warning soon?

Facebook Is Catching Up With Yahoo Soon

Following Willis’ insightful post on the progress of Facebook and other social sites, I’m excited to present to you where Facebook stands in the presence of other giants: Google and Yahoo – The irrefutable number 1 and 2 in the online world.

Looking at last month’s statistics, Yahoo should already hear the footsteps of Facebook drawing near.

Would Facebook finally break into the top 2 soon? From the Compete chart below, it seems like it would.

Facebook vs Yahoo

Facebook is just behind Yahoo by 6 million unique visits. If Yahoo continues to dip while Facebook maintains its steady growth, a replacement of the no. 2 position is inevitable. We are living in an interesting time as we witness how Facebook could possibly overtake the search engines.

Following Facebook’s success and with more people embracing social media, social sites might just dominate the top spots one day. But will that really happen? Only time will tell.

Benefits of Social Networking

Social Networking is catching steam in India and more and more people are joining a community of their choice to remain connected. In the Comscore report the popular social networking sites used by Indian users are : Orkut , Facebook , Bharatstudent ,hi5 , ibibo, Myspace, Linkedin and Bigadda. The Social networking has now taken a next step to be a valuable business tool also. Beyond the casual friendship conencts , these tools offer all of us a great oportunity to utilize the resources to make our community , business and ideas visible to a wider world.

http://studentnetworking.files.wordpress.com/2009/03/socialnetworkingsite1.jpg

Every knows about social networking but not everybody knows the benefits or uses it to it’s full advantage. Of course the main reasons people network are to talk to others, build relationships and find people who are similar to themselves. The more you dig down though the more uses and benefits you can find for social networking and with all the different social network and platforms, you’re spoiled for places to go.

1.Building Meaningful Relationships

Social networking and the human side of it is so important, the more real and transparent you are the better. Therefore you’ll have the trust of people and when barriers are broken down and people actually trust you that’s when your relationships will really grow. When you reach this point and it’s the point you want to strive for, when you trust each other and when you just want to HELP and BENEFIT each other, that’s when the magic happens. For example, on twitter I get a lot of direct messages but the people who send them don’t introduce themselves, say my name or personalize it in any way. I understand the time savings of having automated messages and people don’t always have the time but in the long run it’s better to sent a message by hand. Those who do personalize and actually interact with me are the people I trust, the people I remember and the people I want to help more because they put the effort and time into building a relationship with me.

If you always keep in mind that you really are trying to build valuable and meaningful relationships and not seeing them as another visitor, customer or sale, then everything else you do will bring you nothing but opportunities, responsive followers and lifelong friends. Priortizing the important channels for communication then becomes an essential need of the way we do Social netwrking.

2.Building Traffic

Basically the more networking you do the greater chance you have of getting traffic. This doesn’t mean the more you bombard and spam people, the more traffic you will get. It means the more real and valuable you’re networking efforts are, the more traffic you will get. Building traffic from certain social networks can be very targeted and very beneficial. For example, if you’re looking for traffic from professionals online then go to linkedin, if you’re looking to target blog owners then go to blog social networks and comment on other blogs. Each social network has their own audience and user demographics so you’re approach to each should be slightly tailored to each one.

3.Building links

Link building is the life blood of SEO. The more links and quality links you get the better and if you can get those links with your choice of anchor text then you’ll rank higher in the search engines. Most of your social profiles will allow you to link to your blog or/and your other social profiles. This is a key to successful blogging, you must build as many links as possible.

4.Increased Visibility

The more social profiles you create, the more content you create on them and the more you interact, as at result you will increase the visibility you, your site and your brand will get and also gaining you trust in the minds of others. Remember don’t spread yourself all over the web if you can’t contribute, interact and give time to each of those networks and communities. People want to be in a community, they want to talk and interact with you but if your not there to care or share then that’s a problem and may be bad for you and your site. Still, the basic point is the more you’re seen, the more familiarity and trust you’ll gain.

5.Business and JV Opportunities

Over time and the more people you meet, the more business opportunities you will come across. You’ll meet other leaders and players in your industry and niche so over time these relationships will grow, ye will understand and know what the other is doing and an opportunity will arise when one person takes the first step and proposes something. I would recommend taking action yourself and not hoping or relying on others to propose something first.

6.Mind-sharing and Insight

The idea here is that you can engage with your target audience and find out new insights. You get a unique perspective into them, their lives and their problems. You can give them help and advice and in return they give you feedback and trust, this also applies to joint venture partners where ye both help each other, so in other words mind-share with each other. This is so powerful to be able to talk to your prospects and audience and hear from them what their point of view is. Social networking is also a great atmosphere to get feedback, research and insight because it’s so human focused. People don’t want to be told, forced, spammed or made do anything but when you Involve them that’s when everything changes.

So there you have it, 6 benefits. The benefits are huge and the results you’ll receive can be huge too.

Facebook Got Man Out Of Jail

Apparently, if Facebook can get you into jail, it can also get you out of it.

According to New York Times, Rodney Bradford, a 19 year old teenager was arrested for robbery. The twist is, he had an alibi.

Rodney typed in a message at the time the crime was committed on his Facebook page, from a computer in his father’s apartment in Harlem.

The message read, “Where’s my pancakes”.

If there was anything he was grateful for, it should be the random urge of typing these 3 words into Facebook.

“The district attorney subpoenaed Facebook to verify that the status update had actually been typed from a computer located at 71 West 118th Street in Harlem, as Mr. Bradford said. When that was confirmed, the charges were dropped.”

Whether the charges should be dropped so quickly is debatable. Anyone could have helped him type in those words with his username and password. But that’s not the point anymore, soon we will see more and more cases of social sites used as alibis.

I bet no one knew Facebook status updates could ever be used that way.

Beware of virus on Facebook account, save your data

Net surfers need to be wary of a mail that claims to come from the `Facebook team' but contains malware that can control your computer. According to a security company, it has affected 90,000 computers in two days. This email looks innocent but it is far from that. It displays an email id that purportedly looks like the service department of Facebook and says that your password has been changed. To get a new one, you have to click on an attachment. Once clicked, the malware called `bredolab' can control your computer. Symantec tells you how to protect your computer. Remember on basic fact though, unless you have asked for a password, there is no way you will get one. Also, do protect your computer with up-to-date security software.

The Social Media Revolution [Video]

Is social media a fad?

Apparently not, according to this video, and it’s being backed by strong reasons!

It was explained that social media is causing a fundamental shift in the way we communicate. Some of the statistics might be overwhelming initially but they make absolute sense.

Some useful statistics for businesses:

• 25% of search results for the world’s top 20 brands are links to user generated-content

• 34% of bloggers post opinions about products and brands

• 78% of consumers trust peer recommendations

• Only 14% trust advertisements

• Only 18% of traditional TV campaigns generate positive ROI

• By 2010, Gen Y will outnumber baby boomers, and 96% of them would have joined a social network

• Social media has overtaken porn as the #1 activity on the web

The Social Media Revolution

A Huge Reason For Businesses To Start Using Social Media
On top of the 3 compelling reasons we came up with, this video has managed to use statistics to tell businesses why they should start social media. With the rise of social sites like Facebook and Twitter (and the recent integration of social search into search engines), peer recommendations have never been so influential.

Businesses are under constant pressure to give their best to the consumers. Start using social media to catch the buzz surrounding your brand. Trust me, you want to be the first to know!

THANK GOD: Facebook Saves Suicidal Boy!

A 16 year old British teenager posted the following status update on his Facebook profile: “I’m going away to do something I’ve been thinking about for a while then everybody will find out.”

Would that occur to you as a pre-suicide statement?

Well, it did for a girl who had spotted the update and informed her mum about it. Very quickly, her mum alerted the police in Maryland, US and the news was then passed on to a White House Special Agent who later contacted the British Embassy in Washington DC.

The message finally reached the Metropolitan Police, who managed to detect the teenager’s house. A total of 5 different authorities were involved.

More from the Telegraph

“By the time he was found the boy had taken an overdose and was slumped on the floor, but they were just in time to get him to hospital and save him.

The Facebook message read: “I’m going away to do something I’ve been thinking about for a while then everybody will find out.”

His parents had been sitting downstairs the whole time, completely unaware of the unfolding drama.”

Look OUT! You could save a life

With increasing inclination to use Twitter and Facebook to update people about our daily lives, be sure to keep a lookout for friends who have suffered a recent setback or appear to be feeling down. After all, social media is more than just social-networking. Caring for the people virtually around you and adding color to people’s lives

Official facebook Share Count button - Now with numbers

Click on image to see full screen

The Share Button is the easiest way to allow your content to be shared on Facebook.

Web publishers and blog owners have a new toy to play with: Facebook announced Monday that it has launched new "share" buttons with counters, much in the manner of Digg's iconic buttons and the third-party TweetMeme app for Twitter sharing.

Plus, there's more: Publishers installing Facebook share buttons can also get data back related to how many times that link has been shared, how many users have hit the thumbs-up "like" button or commented on shared versions of the story on Facebook, and how many people have clicked back to it through Facebook.

These Facebook "share" buttons had existed before, and the company said that more than 2 billion pieces of content are shared per week. But this is the first time that the counter and analytics have been available.

A post on the Facebook developer blog explains: "Anyone can add the Share button to their website with little to no technical experience, and style the button from a variety of options." Accessing the analytics however, requires a bit more coding know-how.

This could spell bad news for Digg, as Facebook's significantly bigger and more mainstream audience could make it a far more appealing choice for site owners that would prefer to display one prominent sharing button rather than two. As for Twitter, it doesn't actually own the app that powers the "retweet" buttons. A move like this from Facebook, however, could push it to think a bit harder about a partnership or acquisition--or hasten progress on that "retweet API" it has in the works.

Facebook’s Live Feed Redesign Goes Live Today

Earlier this week we brought you exclusive screenshoot of a new Facebook homepage design featuring, among other things, a “Top News” filter for your news feed.

This morning Facebook announced those changes will be rolling out today, and broke down the reasoning behind the updates, which it says were largely a result of user feedback.

As we reported earlier, when you log in you’ll now be able to toggle between two views: your News Feed, which is essentially what used to live in the Highlights section, and the Live Feed, which is the same real-time feed from your friends that you’re used to. You can edit what appears in that feed via an “Edit Options” link at the bottom of the page.

Your News Feed is now a “summary view of the most interesting activity that’s happened in the last day,” powered by the stories Facebook thinks you’ll most enjoy and based on your past history interacting with the site. Factors include how much activity and attention an item has seen (from friends liking and commenting) and how likely Facebook perceives you might interact with that story.

Also as reported previously, older items have been added back to the News Feed based on user feedback, including when your friends have been tagged in photos or become fans of Pages. Birthdays and events have also been made more prominent again in the right column of your home page.

The changes should be rolling out to all users today — have you seen them yet on your Facebook home page? What do you think of the new views?

Is Facebook Lite Working For Facebook?

It has been slightly more than a month since the launch of Facebook Lite, a stripped down version of Facebook to serve areas where broadband connection speed is slow.

But is Lite working for Facebook?

Perhaps a simple study of Facebook’s growth statistics can help us with the answer.

According to Compete’s data, Facebook has grown from 122 million to 124 million unique visits over the month of September. That is an improvement of 2 million visits!

But can we credit this success to Facebook Lite?

Facebook stats

For the months of June, July and August, Facebook’s growth has been stagnant in terms of unique visits. Each month saw 122 million visits except for September, when we saw a more significant growth of 1.93%, reaching a new high at 124 million. Don’t be deceived by the small percentage, being able to attract yet another 2 million unique visitors is no easy feat when Facebook is already so big. Seems like it is nowhere near saturation yet!

Facebook Lite was live on 10th September. Would it be reasonable to take Facebook Lite as a contributor to this growth?

Unfortunately, this assumption cannot be validated until we know where these 2 million new visitors are coming from. Only if a bulk of them are from places where broadband connection are slow should we consider Lite as a catalyst to Facebook’s growth.
