India witnessed 692 websites hacked in Sep 2009 - Govt

According to a report prepared by the Indian Computer Emergency Research Team (ICERT), which handles computer securities incidents in India, 692 websites were hacked in September 2009. Of the total 692 Indian websites hacked, 74 per cent belonged to the dotin (www.example.co.in or www.example.in) domain, while 20 per cent of the websites were in the dotcom domain (www.example.com).

Sources in the ministry say hacking has been carried out through several methods. “The most common method is to try and steal the password from the administrator or even get the user password. Another method is to try and enter the FTB or web server and destroy the site. If successful, the hacker can completely destroy the website. Another method is to try and ‘poison’ the URL,’’ added the Government official.

Osama Bin Laden Tagged On Facebook Pic

Is Mr. Osama Bin Laden social media savvy?

Not quite so when it came to Facebook. A friend tagged him on a picture captioned: “Chillin at the new crib in Islamabad”, but he didn’t know how to untag himself. CIA replied promptly and the rest was history.

How good if this was true. It could easily be one of the best social media disasters ever!

Technological bonanza: Eye test through phones

Doctors in Bangalore have launched a special initiative where one can get his eyes checked medically even if he isn't physically present in front of a doctor. This all will be possible by an I-Phone application.

Eye Test ($1) is a tool that can be used to test a users sight. Users can test their near visual acuity with a Snellen Chart, record their results and then track their vision over time. The application also includes a color test to help users see the difference between what they see and what a colorblind person may see. Their is also a series of visual illusions included, each with an explanation of why it happens.

it's time for Thanksgiving!

Thanksgiving Day is a harvest festival celebrated primarily in the United States and Canada. Traditionally, it is a time to give thanks for the harvest and express gratitude in general. While perhaps religious in origin, Thanksgiving is now primarily identified as a secular holiday.

Lots of food, football games, parades and plenty of time to spend with the people you cherish most in your life. These things are all inescapable parts of Thanksgiving day. But who would want to escape from them anyway?

The traditional "first Thanksgiving" is the celebration that occurred at the site of Plymouth Plantation, in 1621. The Plymouth celebration occurred early in the history of what would become one of the original thirteen colonies that became the United States. The celebration became an important part of the American myth by the 1800s. This Thanksgiving, modeled after celebrations that were commonplace in contemporary Europe, is generally regarded as America's first. Elementary school teacher Robyn Gioia has argued that the earliest attested "thanksgiving" celebration in what is now the United States was celebrated by the Spanish on September 8, 1565 in what is now Saint Augustine, Florida. Today, Thanksgiving is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November in the United States and on the second Monday of October in Canada.

If you haven't logged into orkut yet today, make sure you do so that you can check out our special Thanksgiving doodle in action:

Thanksgiving dinner is held on this day, usually as a gathering of family members and friends. It's known as Turkey Day!

Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family.

Killer fungus threatening amphibians: Study

A new aquatic fungus is threatening the existence of many of the amphibians like frogs and toads that have existed for 360 million years, a new study claimed. Bd infects over 350 amphibian species by penetrating their skin, but little else is known about where it came from and how it causes disease.

A new aquatic fungus is threatening the existence of many of the amphibians like frogs and toads that have existed for 360 million years, a new study claimed.

The fungus, Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd), was found to be associated with waves of amphibian extinctions in Central America and north-eastern Australia in the 1990’s, according to an article in journal Microbiology Today. Bd infects over 350 amphibian species by penetrating their skin, but little else is known about where it came from and how it causes disease.

The earliest published record of Bd is from a specimen of an African clawed frog in 1938 from South Africa. Around this time there was a huge trade in clawed frogs when they were used in one of the earliest human pregnancy tests.

The global exportation of the clawed frog is likely to have spread Bd around the world. The infection is spread by fungal spores released into the water supply from imported infected animals.

Researchers are trying different approaches to treat existing Bd infection. Some are treating tadpoles with antifungal drugs, whilst more innovative approaches involve introducing ‘probiotic’ bacteria that naturally secrete antifungal compounds which kill Bd on amphibians’ skin.

To help limit the spread of infection, the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH) now recommended screening imported amphibians for presence of Bd.

Beckham has asthma

For the first time, soccer ace David Beckham has been pictured with an asthma inhaler during LA Galaxy’s MLS final defeat against Real Salt Lake City.

The footballer has secretly suffered the condition for years and has never been seen with his puffer.

But Goldenboots let his guard down during the recent match where he was spotted with his inhaler.

The England ace said his asthma is “mild” and has never hindered his career. He even forced himself to play the final with a bruised ankle bone and needed pain-killing injections. “I said I would be back with LA Galaxy after hopefully the World Cup and that’s not going to change. It is the end of the season and I have to just try and rest it,” the Daily Star quoted Beckham as saying.

His spokesman added: “David has had a mild form of asthma for years. It’s not in any way severe.”

Just Rs.19 To Change Your Telecom Operator!

Well TRAI has put all these rumors to rest by announcing that MNP would come into effect by 31st of December this year and the charges for shifting from one operator to another is pegged at a meager 19 rupees.

Now this should surely make the operators sit up and take notice as the dynamics between operators could change as this could bring a shift from the incumbents to the entrants in the telecom space.

Now TRAI has announced that the operators cannot charge the consumer more than Rs.19 to shift his number from one operator to another.

TRAI has announced that MNP would be implemented in category A circles by 31st December and by March next year the entire country would have MNP enabled.

How could MNP impact the players?

Given the low cost of shift this would bring into focus not only the number subscribers who shift but also the kind of subscriber as in post paid vs pre paid and premium vs low end. For example if I am currently with vodafone and my average bill is Rs.3000+ then I am a super premium customer and MNP could really hurt operators ARPU (average revenue per user) numbers if a customers like me make the shift. Hence the impact would not only be in % terms of subscribers i.e. no of subscribers moving out of an operators kitty but also in terms of lifetime value of customer to the topline of the operator. So its not only how many but who makes a shift which also counts.

How would MNP impact VAS players?

We have stated how we feel VAS players can only gain from this as this would bring VAS into the forefront both as a differentiator and as an attraction value. So incumbents like Airtel, Vodafone and RCom would use VAS to retain their subscribers while entrants like Docomo, Aircel, IDEA and others would use VAS to attract subscribers to shift to their network.

Opportunity for a Premium Brand/Player?

MNP throws up the opportunity to create a premium brand and for different pricing models for subscribers who are in the super premium category as far as monthly billing is concerned. Im one such subscriber and I can surely say that Ill be looking forward to operators vying for my 100 odd dollars (4000 rupees plus) a month in billing and providing me top of the line services. Till MNP every subscriber be it a 300 rupees billing customer or a a 3000 rupees billing customer was treated the same way. I expect this to change post MNP and expect operators to take a Bank like approach which they have for credit card i.e. Silver, Gold and Platinum card holder get very different customer service from the same bank. I expect the same differentiation to come in with respect to the amount of billing a customer generates for an operator in due course of time post MNP gets implemented.

Compulsory websites for schools - India

The government of India is planning to make it mandatory for the educational institutions to have their websites where the school's infrastructure facilities and faculty will have to be spelt out.

“That is going to be part of the law, and we are going to take away their recognition if they violate this,” the union human resources development minister Kapil Sibal has said.
